Hi, I’m Alan. I practiced commercial real estate law in New York City for 37 years and came out with most (some?) of my faculties still intact. Now I am doing some writing.

In 2012, I started publishing Leasing Illustrated (archived on this website), a monthly newsletter about commercial leasing for the benefit of tenants. The newsletter was very successful. I tried to write in a way that was not too legal (i.e., it was intelligible to most people) and somewhat entertaining. Some people read it for the legal insights (what were they thinking?). Some read it to see what nonsense I was spouting as a lead in to the legal topic (that’s more like it). The more sophisticated readers just immediately deleted it. But by hitting the email box every month of a target audience with easy to read, free and theoretically helpful information, whether or not they read each issue, many people started to associate “commercial leasing” with “Alan” and that is the magic of email marketing.

Over time, a number of readers suggested that I should try writing (no doubt clients who wanted me to do anything other than continuing to be their lawyer). As one said, “if you can make #$#% leasing funny, then you can make anything funny.”

Now that I have moved on from practicing law I am giving writing a try with Making Good Time. I have also included a section on this website called Heads & Tales where I may include some pieces that are longer or otherwise not suited for a blog.

Hopefully, you will join me.
